North Korea's Still On Facebook?

I remember back in 2010 the DPRK joined Twitter and then Facebook. I recall Facebook shutting them down saying that their site is for individuals to social network not rogue nations to share propaganda. They-y-y're ba-a-ack!!! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Uriminzok/105013712892902

Sorry to disappoint, but that is definitely not an authentic Facebook account belonging to the government of North Korea. It looks like some "fan" has taken up the name and profile picture -- but otherwise the content is really out of line with the sort of propaganda usually churned out by the state media.

As you mentioned, there was a REAL account early on in their digital coming-out party last year. It basically mirrored the still active Twitter account @uriminzok (https://twitter.com/uriminzok). The postings to both the official Twitter and Facebook pages were headlines and links to KCNA (Korea Central News Agency). It's full of American and anti-imperial bluster, but you will never find image macros of fat american kids at McDonalds pointing at scrawny African children, as an example.

Here's a link to a PC World describing the back-and-forth between North Korea and Facebook, where their account was deleted and recreated more than once. It's suspected that the reason for the deletion is a Facebook policy to not allow embargoed countries (DPRK, Cuba etc) to maintain a page like this.

Furthermore, the official account is updated almost daily, with several posts a day. This Facebook account has barely had any updates in the past year.

Hope it helps clear things up!
